The theater became of the home of the popular Grand Ole Opry in 1934. The radio show had always been a hit with audiences across the country, and the new space given to them at the auditorium provided them with space to not only record their radio show but to also put on live performances, in addition. In 1963, the venue was renamed the Grand Ole Opry House.
The Grand Ole Opry moved to another venue in 1974, and the center was renamed the Ryman Auditorium after the man who originally spearheaded the building project. After years of disrepair, the building was revamped in 1989 and it was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2001.
